These days, literacy cannot be overrated. In fact, we’d argue news literacy is a new core competency for the 21st century. Thanks to the digital age, we are all dealing with a veritable tsunami of information on a daily basis. Anyone with a smartphone or laptop can publish “news”, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know what to believe. This class will give you the tools to evaluate news and information on any platform, so you can decide for yourself if it’s credible. By developing and exercising your critical thinking skills, you will learn how to identify and appreciate quality journalism and how to be a responsible consumer, producer and distributor of news. By the end of the semester, you will have acquired a new life skill that will serve you well at Hunter College and beyond. News literacy matters!
